Berberis frikartii (Amsterlveen berberis) is a temperate shrub from North West Europe. It is mainly grown for its ornamental crops (medium shelflife), The crop is harvested by total removing. It starts flowering after 2 - 5 years. Regarding firewood production the shrub`s growing speed is very slow, its energetic value is 4000 ckal/kg and the wood`s drying speed is medium; for firewood production it is not ideal. After 9 years the shrub can be totally removed as it reached its commercial and ecological goal. Berberis frikartii has a lifespan of 25 years.

Environmental limitations

The shrub is 2 meters tall. It is very slow growing and tolerates not less light than partial shade. Berberis frikartii has a shallow root-system and forms symbiotic relations (endo-mycorrhiza). Berberis frikartii thrives in an altitude of 0 to 800 meters above sea-level (temperate). The minimum temperature is -30°C and optimally between 10 - 20°C. The optimal rainfall is 950 mm/year. Without irrigation the annual rainfall should be between 500 - 900 mm (L/m²). The optimal soil-pH is between 6.0 - 8.0 in a soil texture of loam. To salt it is intolerant to wind tolerant and to fire intolerant.
