Description and Uses

Nymphaea nouchali (Blue lotus) is a tropical waterplant from South India. It is mainly grown for its ornamental crops (medium shelflife), The crop is harvested by total removing. There is Lotus oil extracted by deciduous from the waterplant`s flower yielding 1 - 1% oil. The waterplant`s wood is called n/a and has a density of 200 - 1000 kg/m³. Regarding firewood production the waterplant`s growing speed is slow, its energetic value is 3000 ckal/kg and the wood`s drying speed is slow; for firewood production it is not ideal.

Environmental limitations

The waterplant is 1 meters tall. It is slow growing and tolerates not less light than full sun. Nymphaea nouchali has a shallow root-system and forms symbiotic relations (no mycorrhiza). It is not able to fix nitrogen. Nymphaea nouchali is evergreen and not allelopathic and has no thorns.
