Gnetum africanum (African Jointfir vine) is a tropical vine from Zaire. After 7 years the vine can be totally removed as it reached its commercial and ecological goal. Gnetum africanum has a lifespan of 12 years.
The vine is 10 meters tall. It is medium growing and tolerates not less light than shade tolerant. Gnetum africanum has a deep root-system and forms symbiotic relations (endo-mycorrhiza). It is not able to fix nitrogen. The vine`s flower-morphology is dioecious and is pollinated by moths.
Gnetum africanum thrives in an altitude of 0 to 1200 meters above sea-level (tropical). The minimum temperature is 12°C and optimally between 20 - 30°C. The optimal rainfall is 4700 mm/year. Without irrigation the annual rainfall should be between 2200 - 5000 mm (L/m²). The optimal soil-pH is between 5.0 - 7.0 in a soil texture of loam. To salt it is intolerant to wind and to fire .
and diseases.
Seeds are recalcitrant and can be stored for 3 months. There are approximative 1400 seeds/kg. Unfortunately propagation instruction is missing.
