Description and Uses

Malpighia emarginata (Acerola) is a temperate shrub from Caribeans. It is mainly grown for its fruit crops (medium shelflife), The crop is harvested by hand picking. After 45 years the shrub can be totally removed as it reached its commercial and ecological goal. Malpighia emarginata has a lifespan of 90 years.


Environmental limitations

The shrub is 5 meters tall. Malpighia emarginata has a shallow root-system and forms symbiotic relations (endo-mycorrhiza). It is not able to fix nitrogen. The shrub`s flower-morphology is bi-sexual and is pollinated by insects.
