Description and Uses
Abies grandis (Grand fir) is a
temperate
tree from
Washington & British Colombia . It is mainly grown for its
timber crops
, which have a
short shelf life. The crop is harvested by
total removing. It starts flowering after
0 -
0 years. The yield will be
15 m3/ha/year, but in its top season there will be a yield of
1000 m3/100years. Other crop types include;
ornamental, mulch, oil, repellent pesticide, . The
{missing data} is used as
inedible . The
{missing data} is used as "
anti-arthritic activity, " with
{missing data} (0% -
0%) as its significant
phytochemical. There is
Fir giant oil extracted by
steam distillation from the
tree's
fresh leaf yielding
0.50% -
1.00% oil. The
tree's wood is called
{missing data} and has a density of
450 -
460 kg/m³. Regarding firewood production the
tree's growing speed is
very fast, it's energetic value is
4200 ckal/kg and the wood's drying speed is
slow. After
30 years the
tree can be totally removed as it reached its commercial and ecological goal.
Abies grandis has a lifespan of
250 years.
Environmental limitations
The tree is
70 meters tall with a crown of
10 meters wide. The
tree prefers a planting distance of
120 cm and a row distance of
120 cm. It is
very fast growing and
shade tolerant.
Abies grandis has a
shallow root-system and it has symbiotic associations with the
Amanita muscaria fungi
(ecto-mycorrhiza). It is
not able to fix nitrogen with
"any bacteria. The name(s) or string of bacteria include(s)
"not applicable ". The
tree's flower-morphology is
monoecious and is pollinated by
wind.
Abies grandis is
evergreen and
a bit allelopathic and has
no thorns.
Abies grandis thrives in an altitude of
0 to
600 meters above sea-level
(temperate). The minimum temperature is
0°C; optimally between
10 -
15°C. The optimal rainfall is
1750
mm/year. Without irrigation the annual rainfall should be between
500 -
2500mm (L/m²). The optimal soil-pH is between
5.0 -
7.0 in a soil texture of
sand. To salt it is
a bit tolerant to wind
tolerant and to fire
a bit tolerant.
Pests and Diseases
Abies grandis is susceptible to the following pests:
Adelges piceae
, Barbara colfaxiana
, Choristoneura occidentalis
, Dryocoetes confusus
, Orgyia pseudotsugata
. Scolytus ventralis And it's susceptible to the following diseases:

,
.
Seed Propagation
Seeds are
stratificant and can be stored for
5 months. There are approximative
50000
seeds/kg. The seeds can be propagated as followed:
- (1) Store harvested seeds moisty at a chilling temperature of 3-7 degrees C for 2-4 months
- (3) Remove the seeds from cold to a permanent warm temperature.
- (3) Seeds germinate above ground (epigeous)
